USMC Tattoos

Though there are lots of different USMC tattoos that can be found today, the traditional one came in the shape of a rather mean looking bulldog.

The English bulldog is a reminder of World War I. During this war, German soldiers gave the United States Marine Corp the nickname “devil dogs” due to their tactics and maneuvers. As soon as the American soldiers hear of this name, they immediately adopted it. Soon after the name was given, the United States government began to post signs and posters depicting the bulldog with the words “Devil Dog Recruiting Station” listed underneath the picture in place of an address. The infamous posted itself depicted a dachshund (representing Germany) wearing a spiked helmet running away from an English bulldog.

As soon as the troops discovered that they rather liked this new nickname, various officers began to purchase real bull dogs. These dogs often traveled with troops from base to base, which is why the English bulldog is now instantly recognized as being a symbol of the United States Marine Corp. Most of these symbols are still drawn in the shape of a bulldog, though numerous modern soldiers have come up with other symbols that can represent the Marines. Some of these include a picture of the earth with an anchor and eagle wrapped around it; an American flag with an eagle; or the words “Semper Fidelis,” which translates into “Always Faithful.”

If you are part of the Marine Corps, you may be interested to know that only a handful of tattoos have been approved by the U.S. Marines. This means that if you want authentic USMC tattoos, you must select one that is truly symbolic. For the most part, you just can’t go wrong with that old English bulldog. Or, you could go the extra mile and have a replica of the bulldog and dachshund poster drawn on your arm or back. Either way, most of these symbols hold a great deal of significance for those that are part of the Marines.

Making your way through the Marine Corp. is a right. This is why many young Marines choose to have their allegiance tattooed forever on their body. Being a soldier is something that is not to be forgotten – with a tattoo, you can immortalize your journey as a Marine forever.

Look over all of the USMC tattoos that you can find before selecting one. In the end, you may discover that the old bulldog looks as mean as it ever did.
